Inlay, filling and inlay
Treatments aiming at preserving the teeth in the mouth belong to the field of conservation dentistry. In the modern view, pain therapy, fillings or cosmetic dentistry belong to this category, along with endodontic treatments. Conservation dentistry is a discipline of its own, and in the new examination system for specialisation, dentists can opt for specialising in this field (together with prosthetics).
The basis of pain therapy is to assess to what extent the tooth has been damaged due to decay. The sensitivity test, during which the teeth are exposed to cold, is applied – among others – to see whether the tooth is still alive and it reacts to heat stimulus. Depending on the response, the dentist can decide whether the tooth can be filled or some more serious endodontic treatment is needed.
In conservation dentistry, concerning fillings, many things have changed in recent years. Composite filling materials have become available, which make it possible to restore the teeth in their original shade. Naturally, our patients can also choose ceramics or gold fillings (INLAYS) besides composite materials. The inlays are prepared by the dental lab technician with the help of the cast taken by the dentist. The finished inlay is then placed in the mouth and attached by the dentist in the surgery. Gold, due to its physical properties, is an excellent closing material on the inlay.
Composite materials and inlays are fixed in the cavity by gluing as well, so it is also chemical bondage, unlike in the case of amalgams, for example, that keeps them in place. Further advantages are that they are the colour of the tooth and can be polished easily. In this way, with the help of specialists, inconspicuous fillings can be prepared. Cosmetic dentistry offers more than this, however. It is also possible to bleach discoloured teeth. This can be performed by applying chemical methods or with ‘inside tooth’ technology, the prerequisite of which is root canal treatment. On the patient’s demand ceramic covers can also be prepared, which are placed on the outer surface of the tooth, thus covering the discoloured area. Creating chemical covers requires special expertise and attention.
Endodontics is the science of treating the diseases of the tooth pulp and performing pulpectomy. This area is commonly referred to as root canal treatment. During the treatment, the tooth is drilled into and the root canal is found, then its length is measured with the help of an X-ray image. The X-ray can be taken in our surgery. After this, the root canal needs to be cleansed completely and then sealed up with properly. If the tooth causes no problem to the patient as a result of the treatment, then root filling can be applied.
With today’s technology and tools, it has become possible to apply complicated root canal treatments as well (e.g. that of back molars). In our surgery, specialists deal with root canal treatments. All the necessary tools and appliances are available in our surgery. Root canal treatment is the only method to preserve the tooth in the mouth in case of serious decay or serious pulp inflammation, and this is our primary goal.
